Shadow

There is a creature of the dark

That comes alive in my sleep

In my dreams, it follows me

As I slumber deep

This creature may bring messages

As it wonders through my mind

Carrying secrets in my subconscious

Hidden and hard to find

Sometimes it is me

Sometimes it is another

Sometimes it is my enemy

Sometimes it is my lover

It can hide in a story

Making it difficult to understand

It can stand right next me

Smiling, holding my hand

Sometimes it brings chaos

Other times, it’s order it creates

Sometimes it frightens me so much

I’m paralyzed when I try to wake

Sometimes the creature helps me fight

When others call me names

In a flash, it turns on me

Fighting as if I’m to blame

The creature writes an endless script

Terrified of the unknown

It desires to be like everyone else

It’s so tired of being alone

The creature screams silently

As it feeds me different words

Quietly in my deepest sleep

It’s purpose can be heard

But even when I wake

It is there just the same

Trembling in my shadow

As I try to keep it tame

So it doesn’t know the difference

Between the night and the day

Either way it’s stuck in darkness

Trying to find its way

Trying to find it’s freedom

It’s only instinct is to fight

To remove the shackles I’ve given it

As it’s never seen the light
